SCHOOL PRINCIPAL POSITION

The German Heritage Language School (GHLS) currently invites applications for the position of  School Principal (part-time). This is a paid position with a multi-year commitment, renewable on an annual basis, starting March 1st, 2026. 

The GHLS is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1987 and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It offers an after-school German language program once a week for approximately 50 children from Kindergarten to  Grade 12, as well as 50 adults.  

Classes may be in-person and/or online and take place on Thursdays, with junior classes beginning at 4:30 pm and adult classes starting at 6:30 pm. There are two school terms, which run between September and May. The Principal is required to be on-site from 4:30 pm–6:30 pm.

The Principal leads the school in all academic and operational-related matters, and reports and is accountable to the GHLS Board of Directors. The teaching  staff reports to the Principal. For a more detailed job description, please contact  hr@germanschool.ca.  

CANDIDATE PROFILE  

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic individual with a caring and engaging attitude. As a creative, collaborative, and resourceful leader, the Principal  manages the day-to-day operation of the GHLS. The candidate has excellent oral and written communication skills in both German and English.  

As the school operates as a non-profit organization, the position requires a certain degree of flexibility with regards to workload and scheduling of hours over the school year, which may not always be consistent from one week to the next. Compensation for this position is $3,600 per school year, paid quarterly. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

 Teachers’ and Helpers’ Positions

 

We offer classes for children and adults for various levels. All classes are structured according to age and language background, based on the Common European Framework of Reference.

Children start as young as age four and are encouraged to speak German through play and music. In the children 4 and 5 classes (ages 10 - 17), students can prepare for the German Language Diploma (DSD = Deutsches Sprachdiplom). Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in German.
